A method in an on-demand autonomous ODA system includes monitoring travel change requests from a plurality of queued vehicles including a first leading vehicle (Lv) and a following vehicle (Fv). Upon receiving an end-of-trip request from a queue vehicle, the method includes broadcasting information about the request to another queue vehicle and monitoring acknowledgement of the request. When the end-of-trip request originates from the first Lv, the method includes selecting a new Lv, calculating a set point of the new Lv and the Fv, and signaling the Fv and the new Lv with respect to the set point. Upon receiving a trip modification request from the Fv, the method includes broadcasting information about the request to a first Lv, selecting a new Lv, calculating a collective point of the new Lv and the Fv, and signaling the Fv and the new Lv with respect to the collective point.
