A brake control unit (50) is provided that includes a main control branch (510), a backup control branch (520), and a mode control utility (530), where the mode control utility (530) is configured to select an operating mode of the brake control unit from a plurality of potential operating modes including at least a normal operating mode and a degraded operating mode in accordance with an integrity diagnostic indication, where the operating mode of the brake control unit is selected from a plurality of potential operating modes including at least a normal operating mode and a degraded operating mode. The main control branch (510) and the backup control branch (520) are each configured to generate brake motor drive signals (D10, D20) with their respective converters controlled by their respective control modules in response to an external brake control signal (IB), where the main control module (511) is configured to provide an integrity diagnostic indication, and the backup control branch (520) is configured to provide an integrity diagnostic indication. Because it comprises at least first and second mutually cooperating main control components (511A, 511B) configured to diagnose (QA) the integrity state of each other, and because it is further configured to diagnose the integrity state of the backup control branch (520) by verifying the response signal (SR) of the backup control branch in response to the test signal (ST).
