A method for controlling propulsion of a heavy vehicle, the method comprising: configuring a nominal axle slip rate ([lambda] 0) of a drive axle as a function of a desired longitudinal wheel force (Fx) to be generated by the drive axle, where the axle slip rate ([lambda]) indicates a difference between a current vehicle speed (vx) and a vehicle speed corresponding to a rotational speed ([omega] 0) of the drive axle, a rotational speed ([omega] 1) of the left wheel and a rotational speed ([omega] 2) of the right wheel are obtained from a current axle slip rate ([lambda]) of the drive axle, a peak axle slip rate value ([lambda] max) associated with an open differential peak longitudinal force (Fx, max) of the drive axle is estimated based on the current axle slip rate ([lambda]) and based on the obtained corresponding rotational speeds ([omega] 1, [omega] 2) of the left and right wheels, and an open differential peak longitudinal force (Fx, max) of the drive axle is calculated based on the estimated peak axle slip rate value ([lambda] max). Propulsion of the heavy vehicle unit is controlled by setting a current axle slip rate (Lambda) of the drive axle based on a configured nominal axle slip rate (Lambda 0) adjusted according to the estimated peak axle slip rate value (Lambda max).
