The invention provides a lightweight battery box for an electric vehicle. A battery box for an electric vehicle includes an aluminum casting extending between and engaged with a BIW or a chassis rail of the electric vehicle. The aluminum casting includes a bottom wall, a side wall having a pair of stringers fixedly attached to the BIW or chassis stringers of the vehicle, and a plurality of cross members. The bottom wall, the side wall, and the plurality of cross members define a structural housing having a plurality of battery compartments and at least one crush zone, and the structural housing is a load bearing member of the electric vehicle.
