The invention provides a method for improving the context awareness of an advanced driving assistance system in a host vehicle. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring an image data stream comprising a plurality of image frames by using an image sensor; a visual processor may analyze the image data stream to detect objects, shadows, and/or illumination in the image frames; the context recognition engine may identify at least one most probable traffic condition from a set of predetermined traffic conditions taking into account the detected objects, shadows, and/or lighting; the processor may then control the host vehicle taking into account at least one most probable traffic condition.
