In an electromechanical brake system (1) having at least one electromechanical brake (2) having a friction surface (3), a lining carrier (4) with a brake lining (5), and an electric motor (6) for a predetermined movement of the lining carrier (4), the brake system (1) has a control and monitoring unit (9), the control and monitoring unit (9) is designed to receive a braking action request on the input side and to at least indirectly actuate the electric motor (6) in order to achieve a predeterminable pressing force (22) exerted by the brake lining (5) on the friction surface (3), it is proposed that the control and monitoring unit (9) ascertain a target main pressing force value (26) of the pressing force (22) from the braking action request, as a first contact of the brake lining (5) with the friction surface (3) begins, the pressing force (22) is set to an initial pressing force value (25) in the range between 25% and 60% of the target main pressing force value (26), and after a first time period (23) following the first contact, the pressing force (22) is increased to the target main pressing force value (26).
