In one embodiment, a method includes receiving motor speed data, and in response to determining that the motor speed data indicates that a speed of the motor is below a threshold speed: calculating an amount of heat corresponding to a phase imbalance of the motor; identifying at least one thermal mitigation parameter based on the heat amount; generating at least one thermal management motor position command based on the at least one thermal mitigation parameter; the motor is selectively controlled according to a thermal management motor position command.
