Systems and methods for predicting and implementing a change in a vehicle operating mode are provided. A method includes monitoring an accelerator pedal position of a vehicle over time; obtaining information indicative of a speed of the vehicle; comparing the position value of the accelerator pedal during the predetermined time period with a predetermined threshold position; comparing the vehicle speed with a predetermined threshold speed; determining a transition from a current vehicle operating mode to a new vehicle operating mode based on a comparison of the position value of the accelerator pedal to a predetermined threshold position and a comparison of the vehicle speed to a threshold speed; and at least one of (i) providing an indication of a transition from the current vehicle operating mode to the new vehicle operating mode, or (ii) automatically transitioning to the new vehicle operating mode without user input.
