The present disclosure provides a system and method for selecting a battery pack for pre-charging a high voltage DC bus of an electric vehicle. Disclosed is a cycle structure that prevents repeated selection of a battery pack to prevent burnout of a resistor of the battery pack due to a rapid subsequent pre-charge event. The systems and methods provided include an easy solution that is scalable to a system having any number of battery packs, does not require any additional hardware, and is an inexpensive technology to protect expensive components of an electric vehicle.
