The invention relates to a method for determining a steering lag demand of a steering device of a vehicle, a steering system, a control unit and a computer readable storage medium. The steering device is part of a steering system of a vehicle and is coupled to at least one actuator. The actuator is arranged to apply a steering torque to the steering device. The method includes at least the step of determining a steering lag demand based on at least one rack force of the steering system. The steering hysteresis demand forms at least part of a target steering torque that may be applied to the steering device by at least one actuator.
