A method increases fidelity of a lane positioning function on a motor vehicle by receiving an input signal indicative of a relative position of the vehicle with respect to a road. The input signals include GPS and geocoded map data, and an electronic turn signal indicating activation of the turn signal rod. A sensor-specific lane probability distribution is calculated through a lane positioning function using the input signal. Various distributions are fused through a localization function to generate a primary lane assignment. The primary lane assignment corresponds to a road lane having the highest probability in a set of possible lane assignments. In response to the primary lane assignment, an autonomous steering control action is performed on the motor vehicle using an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The motor vehicle has a controller that executes the method, for example by executing instructions from a computer readable medium.
