A monitoring method for an energy storage device determines: (a) a thermal characteristic of the energy storage device that supplies current to one or more vehicle loads to power the one or more vehicle loads; and/or (b) an electrical characteristic of the energy storage device or the one or more vehicle loads. The method determines whether operation of the energy storage device indicates that the energy storage device is accidentally heating or accidentally cooling, and identifies a fault in the energy storage device in response to determining that the energy storage device is accidentally heating or accidentally cooling.
