A wandering mode for passenger pick-up with an autonomous vehicle. The present technology relates to passenger pick-up by an autonomous vehicle in a manner that ensures passenger pick-up within an estimated time of arrival (ETA). For example, according to customer authorization, the autonomous vehicle may wander or otherwise stop within a certain vicinity (e.g., distance or time) to ensure passenger pick-up within a predetermined time. One vehicle can be assigned to a passenger within a set time range, or multiple vehicles can be assigned to a specific event. Either approach may be used to ensure the shortest wait passenger pick-up. One benefit is to avoid the user-initiated boarding request when the customer is ready to leave a location since the vehicle will have been present and ready to bring the boarding person to their desired destination. The wandering may include pre-positioning the vehicle at a given location, or autonomously driving to the vicinity as needed.
