A hybrid electric system for a rotorcraft may include a first heat engine, a second heat engine, and an electric machine. The first heat engine may be sized to produce a maximum first heat engine power that is less than one or more engine inoperative (OEI) required power, and the second heat engine may be sized to produce a maximum second heat engine power that is less than the OEI required power. The electric machine may be sized to provide at least a remaining power required to achieve the OEI required power in an OEI state.
