The invention discloses a power generation control method for a hybrid electric vehicle, which comprises the following steps: a VCU calculates power generation demand power according to an external demand, compares the power generation demand power with a preset threshold value, performs a series power generation mode if the power generation demand power is greater than or equal to the preset threshold value, and performs a series power generation mode if the power generation demand power is less than the preset threshold value. If yes, the VCU performs a self-idling power generation mode, in the series power generation mode, the VCU sends the target torque to the ECU and sends the target rotating speed to the GCU, and the GCU performs closed-loop control on the rotating speed. In the self-idling power generation mode, when the GCU generates power or does not generate power when the power generation demand power is smaller than the preset threshold value, the control mode is switched, the target rotating speed is sent to the ECU through the VCU, the target torque is sent to the GCU, the torque is controlled through the GCU, and the target rotating speed is controlled through the ECU, so that the risks of jumping and oscillation of the target rotating speed are reduced, and the power generation control quality is improved.
