The present disclosure provides a battery powered vehicle sensor. A computer includes a processor and a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to: select a scan rate for a first sensor of a vehicle based on at least one of data related to a current time or data related to a location of the vehicle; instructing the first sensor to operate at the selected scan rate; in response to receiving data indicating a newly appearing object from the first sensor, turning on a second sensor; data from the second sensor is then recorded. The second sensor has a higher power consumption than the first sensor.
