The invention relates to a method and a system for estimating the current energy consumption of an electric vehicle, where the electric vehicle (1) is powered by a propulsion battery (2), the method comprising: obtaining (S102) previous energy consumption values (ECt-1, ECt-2, ECt-3) and current driving mode parameter values at a set of previous moments (t-1, t-2, t-3); a current energy consumption (ECt) is estimated (S104) based on a weighted moving average model (5) fed with energy consumption values, where the weighted moving average model contains a modeling gain factor for each of at least a portion of previous energy consumption values, where the modeling gain factors are modeled as a function of the driving mode parameter.
