The present invention relates to a vapor canister for a vehicle evaporative emission control system, comprising: a canister housing (20) defining an interior volume (22) for receiving one or more volumes of sorbent (24.1, 24.2, 24.3) therein; a fuel vapor inlet port (26) for connecting the canister with a fuel tank (16); an exhaust port (28) for drawing fresh air into the canister; a purge port (30) for withdrawing fuel vapors from the canister; and a pump (50) integrated with the tank housing (20). An integrated pump (50) is actuated to provide an operating pressure or underpressure in the tank. The system is used for various operation modes, such as tank purge, leak detection diagnosis, fueling or engine shutdown.
