The invention relates to an ambient lighting device (1), comprising control means (16) for controlling the lighting of the ground and a projection module (7), which has a lighting device (10) comprising a plurality of lighting means (10a, 10b) and an array (11) of projection optical systems, each projection optical system comprising an associated target structure (13) and an associated projection lens (14). According to the invention, the array (11) of projection optics has a plurality of sub-arrays (11a, 11b), each of which can be individually illuminated by means of an illumination means (10a, 10b) of the lighting device (10) associated with the respective sub-array (11a, 11b), whereby a sub-pattern (G1, G2, G3, G4) is generated on the ground in the surroundings of the motor vehicle (1) by means of projection of an associated target structure (13) of the projection optics of the respective sub-array (11a, 11b). The control means (16) are designed to operate the projection module (7) in a dynamic operating mode in which the brightness (H) of the lighting means (10a, 10b) is automatically varied on the basis of a sequence pattern (SM), the sequence pattern (SM) for the respective lighting means (10a, 10b) describing a temporal variation (Hl, H2, H3, H4) of the brightness (H) of the lighting means, and the control means (16) are designed to operate the projection module (7) in a dynamic operating mode in which the brightness (H) of the lighting means (10a, 10b) is automatically varied on the basis of the sequence pattern (SM). And the temporal variation (Hl, H2, H3, H4) differs between the at least two lighting means (10a, 10b) at least partially in a predetermined period of time.
