The invention provides an all-wheel drive electric vehicle with a simulated axle lock. A vehicle includes a first axle having a first electric machine; the second axle is provided with a second motor; and a controller. The controller is programmed to command a first torque to the first electric machine based on a driver demand torque and a speed of the second axle in a four-wheel drive mode selected by a user, and command a second torque to the second electric machine based on a comparison of the driver demand torque to the first torque and further based on a speed of the first axle.
