The invention is applied to mobile geography in an automotive environment. A portable device is configured to provide geographic information to a head unit of a vehicle equipped with a display device. One or more processors determine a user context related to a geographic location and detect that a portable device has been communicatively coupled to the head unit of the vehicle. The one or more processors transmit a request to the head unit that the head unit accepts data from the portable device for output via the display device, without an explicit user command. In response to receiving an indication that the request has been granted, the one or more processors cause information related to the geographic location to be displayed via the display device without explicit user input at the portable device.
