Techniques described herein relate to modifying a vehicle travel route, such as an autonomous vehicle, based on an overlap region associated with an object in an environment. In an example, map data may be used in part to generate an initial travel route for an autonomous vehicle to cause it to follow and pass through an environment in which it is located. In some cases, a way-giving travel route may be generated based on detection of an object, and an autonomous vehicle may evaluate a cost function to determine whether to perform way giving or follow an initial travel route. In a similar manner, an autonomous vehicle may determine a meeting position of two lanes in an intersection and use the meeting position to update a range of overlap regions to prevent the autonomous vehicle from obstructing the intersection and/or to provide sufficient space to give way to oncoming vehicles when meeting.
