The invention relates to a brake system (100) for a motor vehicle, comprising electromechanical wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 110), a brake actuation unit (112) and a central brake control unit (102), the wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 110) each having a local brake control unit (118, 120, 122, 124). The central brake control unit (102) is directly connected via a first data connection (154) to the brake operating unit (112) and to the local brake control unit (118, 120, 122, 124) of the wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 110), and the brake operating unit (112) is directly connected via a second data connection (156) to the local brake control unit (118, 120, 122, 124) of at least one wheel brake (104, 106, 108, 110). In a normal operating mode of the brake system (100), the central brake control unit (102) is configured to determine at least one braking demand in dependence on first operating information of the brake operating unit (112), in particular received via the first data connection (154), and to transmit a control signal corresponding to the braking demand to the wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 108). The present invention relates to a local brake control unit (118, 120, 122, 124) for a vehicle (100, 110). In a backup level operating mode of the brake system (100), the local brake control units (118, 120, 122, 124) of the wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 110) are configured to actuate the respective wheel brakes (104, 106, 108, 110) based on second operating information of the brake operating unit (112) received via the second data connection (156).
