The present disclosure provides passive entry passive start verification with two factor authentication. A method for a Secure Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) authentication protocol uses a passive key device carried by a user to measure a walking gait of a user approaching an associated vehicle. The method further includes measuring, using the vehicle awareness system, the gait of the user from the perspective of the vehicle to compare the two and verify the security of the unlock request, authenticate the unlock session, and prevent relay attacks. A two-factor authentication protocol uses detected key gait measurements (key G gait) and vehicle perception-based gait measurements (C gait) to verify the physical presence and temporal state of the key fob or mobile phone relative to the vehicle by comparing independent gaits and generating control commands in response to consistent and inconsistent measurements.
