The present invention provides a downforce system for a vehicle, the downforce system comprising: a flow restrictor configured to restrict a flow of air into an area defined at least in part by the flow restrictor and a ground surface on which the vehicle is disposed; a rim disposed on the flow restrictor and configured to form an at least partial seal with the ground; a dedicated pressure source disposed outside the flow restrictor and connected to the flow restrictor through an air flow path, the pressure source configured to generate a pressure differential across the flow restrictor; and a dust and debris removal system configured to prevent dust and debris from exiting the down pressure system through the air flow path. A downforce acting on the vehicle may be generated by generating a pressure differential across the flow restrictor (e.g., by generating a pressure in a region defined by the flow restrictor that is lower than atmospheric pressure outside the region). The downforce may result in an improved grip or traction of the vehicle, which may improve the maneuverability and safety of the vehicle.
