The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for detecting thermal runaway of a battery of an electric vehicle. The apparatus includes a plurality of battery cells connected in series by a high voltage (HV) line, and a battery module including the plurality of battery cells. The plurality of main sensing lines are electrically connected to HV lines between the plurality of battery cells to measure voltages of the respective battery cells. A plurality of auxiliary sensing lines are connected to the HV lines as input lines of the battery module and the HV lines as output lines of the battery module, respectively, to measure a voltage of the battery module.
