An illustrative example method is used to estimate a frictional characteristic of a surface below a vehicle having a plurality of wheels in contact with the surface. The method includes determining a wheel speed of at least one of the wheels; determining a speed of at least one of the wheels separately from the determined wheel speed; determining a wheel slip of at least one of the wheels based on the determined wheel speed and the determined speed; and determining a frictional characteristic based on the determined wheel slip. Determining the speed separately from determining the wheel speed is accomplished using at least one detector, such as a radar or lidar detector, that provides an output corresponding to the rate of change in distance.
