Occupant attention and cognitive load monitoring for autonomous and semi-autonomous driving applications is disclosed. In various examples, the estimated field of view or gaze information of the user may be projected outside the vehicle and compared to vehicle-aware information corresponding to the environment outside the vehicle. As a result, internal monitoring of a driver or occupant of the vehicle may be used to determine whether the driver or occupant has processed or seen certain object types, environmental conditions, or other information external to the vehicle. To more comprehensively understand the state of the user, the attention and/or cognitive load of the user may be monitored to determine whether one or more actions should be taken. Thus, notifications, AEB system activation, and/or other actions may be determined based on a more complete user state, such as based on a comparison between cognitive load, attention, and/or external perception of the vehicle and estimated user perception.
