The invention relates to optimized regenerative braking for hybrid electric vehicle powertrain configuration. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains and control logic to optimize regenerative braking (regen), methods of making/using such systems, and HEVs that increase regen with reduced engine and transmission friction are provided. A method of operating an HEV includes determining whether an HEV operating state or failure prevents engagement of a regen control operation, and if not, responsively determining whether a torque request for an HEV powertrain is less than a road load on the HEV. In response to the torque request being less than the road load, a regen control operation is performed. The regen control operation includes the powertrain drivingly disconnecting the engine from the wheels, and the engine operates at a target engine speed. Calculating a negative torque compensation to maintain a vehicle deceleration rate after the engine is disconnected from the wheels; the traction motor outputs a negative torque based on the negative torque compensation.
