The electric propulsion system also includes at least one power component, where the power component has an idle state and an operational state. The method comprises the steps of: a) determining at least one parameter of the electrical component in an operating state; b) inputting the parameters into a thermal model of the power component; c) predicting, in real time, the temperature Tp of an electrical component in an operating state on the vehicle; d) comparing the predicted temperature value Tp with a predetermined threshold value Tmax, and e) automatically reducing the magnitude of the current through the power component to a safety level if the predicted temperature value Tp exceeds the predetermined threshold value Tmax.
