The invention relates to a method in a forestry machine. In the method, one or more sensors (15) are used to observe the surroundings of the forestry machine (10). The observations are aggregated to form a database (12) of surroundings, and the database (12) is utilized in operation of the forestry machine (10). In the method, observation of a limited area is used. In addition, a database (12) is formed in real time in the forestry machine (10). Furthermore, a view (19) is formed from the selected observation database (12), from which a trajectory (13) in the surroundings is identified. Once the direction of travel (14) of the forestry machine (10) relative to the identified track (13) has been identified, the forestry machine (10) is oriented in the direction of the track (13). The invention also relates to a system in a forestry machine.
