The invention provides control of accelerator lift pedal deceleration in an electric vehicle. A vehicle includes a controller programmed to generate a command to an electric machine based on a vehicle speed value and a wheel acceleration torque value to reduce a torque output rate after an accelerator pedal is released. The torque output rate initially decreases at a first rate and then decreases at a second rate slower than the first rate when the wheel acceleration torque value is greater than 0 Nm.
