The invention relates to a vehicle occupant restraint system. A vehicle occupant restraint system includes an airbag configured to deploy downwardly into a cabin from a roof of the cabin by receiving a supplied gas; an area setting unit configured to set a predetermined area according to a position of the airbag; a collision sensor configured to detect a collision of the vehicle; a seat position detection sensor configured to detect at least one of a position and an angular position of a seat on which the occupant is seated; and a seat control unit configured to perform control to change at least one of the position and the angular position of the seat when the collision sensor detects a collision of the vehicle and the seat position detection sensor detects that the seat is located in the predetermined area. Therefore, the positional relationship between the seat and the airbag can be appropriately controlled.
