The invention discloses an elevator load test safety protection device and method. Two sliding blocks are located between two clamp blocks, one sliding block corresponds to one clamp block and one self-locking mechanism, the sliding blocks and the clamp blocks are in sliding connection through dovetail groove mechanisms, a base is provided with sliding grooves, the bottoms of the clamp blocks are inserted into the sliding grooves, a shell is fixed on the base, the side faces of the clamp blocks are connected with the shell through brake springs, and the tops of the sliding blocks are connected with the shell through reset tension springs; the speed limiter steel wire rope penetrates through the base and the shell and is located between the two sliding blocks, and the two clamp blocks are connected through an electric push rod; and the controller is connected with the electric push rod and the self-locking mechanism. The device can effectively solve the problem that low-speed sliding braking is not reliable in the elevator 1.25-times rated load test process.
