The invention provides an apparatus for detecting the stress level of a driver and a method thereof. The apparatus includes: an electrocardiogram sensor that measures an electrocardiogram of a driver using an electrode provided on a steering wheel of a vehicle; and a controller that monitors the electrocardiogram of the driver, determines an ineffective interval in the electrocardiogram based on a shape of the electrocardiogram, and compensates for the electrocardiogram within the determined ineffective interval.
