The present invention relates to an elevator safety circuit (24) for an elevator system, wherein an output end is arranged to selectively provide a current from an input end to an electromagnetic brake coil (18) via a current path. Actuator transistors (34, 36) are arranged in series along a current path between the input end and the output end, and the actuator transistors are arranged to selectively allow the current to pass therethrough. A controller (38) is arranged to perform a test operation when the braking element (14) is in the open position. The test operation includes operating the actuator transistors (34, 36) in its disabled mode for a period of time, monitoring the current through the brake coil (18), and determining whether a magnitude of the current decreases for the period of time selected such that the magnitude of the current remains sufficient to maintain the brake element (14) in the open position during the test.
