The invention relates to a method for stabilizing traffic by striving to achieve a maximum suitable speed for a multi-lane road section, using an autonomous vehicle and a vehicle controlled by the driver itself in a mixed manner. The method comprises the steps: sensing positions and speeds of all vehicles in a multi-lane road section; determining a maximum appropriate speed for an overtaking lane of the multi-lane road section; identifying a mismatched vehicle guided by the driver, the speed of the mismatched vehicle being higher than the maximum appropriate speed; evaluating, for each of the unmatched vehicles, autonomous vehicles that can travel in front of the corresponding unmatched vehicle and that can perform an overtaking maneuver; selecting one of the evaluated autonomous vehicles and reducing the speed of the corresponding unmatched vehicle in that the selected autonomous vehicle performs an overtaking maneuver, the overtaking maneuver being performed at a speed at most corresponding to the maximum suitable speed. Further aspects of the invention also relate to a traffic control unit and to an autonomous vehicle, which are each provided for carrying out the method.
