The embodiment of the invention discloses a knee airbag explosion system and method. The explosion system comprises a seat occupying sensor, a distance sensor, an air bag controller and a knee safety air bag, wherein the seat occupying sensor, the distance sensor and the knee safety air bag are all electrically connected with the air bag controller, and the seat occupying sensor is installed in a seat cushion of the front row of the vehicle and used for obtaining seat taking information of the front row of the vehicle; the distance sensor is installed on the surface of an instrument panel close to the legs of a passenger in the front row of the vehicle and used for collecting distance information from legs of a passenger to the surface of the instrument panel, and the airbag controller is used for controlling the knee safety airbag to participate in protection according to the seat taking information and the distance information. According to the knee airbag explosion system, secondary injury to legs of a passenger caused by detonation of the knee safety air bag under the conditions that the vehicle is collided and the space of the legs of the passenger is insufficient is avoided, and intelligent control of a knee safety air bag detonation strategy is realized by the air bag controller.
