The present subject matter discloses a hybrid electric vehicle (100) with a battery charging system, which includes a battery (110), a battery management system (113), and a support unit (119). The support unit (119) includes a boost converter (120) and a voltage source inverter (118) connected to an electronic control unit (117). Based on the different motor speeds and state of charge of the battery, the battery management system (113) connects with either the voltage source inverter (118) or the boost converter (120). The boost converter (120) takes over charging of the battery (110) during various conditions where the voltage source inverter (118) is not able to charge the battery (110). This facilitates charging of battery (110) during very high speeds as well as in standstill conditions, and charging of battery (110) during deep-discharge that results in ease of use and better efficiency in the hybrid electric vehicles (100).
