The invention belongs to the technical field of wheel defect detection, and discloses a wheel tread defect detection system, which comprises a first image acquisition device, a second image acquisition device and a first sensor, wherein the image acquired by the first image acquisition device forms a first image of a complete wheel tread; the image acquired by the second image acquisition device forms a second image of the complete wheel tread; the first sensor is used for triggering the first image acquisition device and/or the second image acquisition device to perform image acquisition; the collection direction of the first image collection device is opposite to that of the second image collection device, and the size of an image collected by the second image collection device for the same section of tread is not smaller than that of an image collected by the first image collection device for the tread. According to the method, the influence of shielding components such as a sanding pipe on the tread image is solved, the tread image of the wheel is completely covered, and the final analysis result is more accurate. The invention further discloses a detection method applying the detection system.
