The invention relates to a method for operating a rail vehicle (10) when passing through a separation point (22) in a current supply device outside a vehicle. The rail vehicle (10) comprises: at leastone current collector (30) for receiving electrical energy from the current supply device (15); a main transformer (42) for converting the received electrical energy provided on the primary side of the main transformer (42) to a desired voltage level on the secondary side of the main transformer (42); and a detection device (31), which is provided for detecting the phase of the alternating current conducted by the current supply device (15); wherein the method comprises: detecting, by means of the detection device (31), a phase in a section of the current supply device (15), which section lies behind the separation point (22); and adjusting the phase of the primary-side voltage of the main transformer (42) in accordance with the detected phase. The invention further relates to a rail vehicle (10).
