The invention comprises the following steps: (S100) detecting a parking space (10) withthe parking assistant (14); (S200) upon detecting the parking space (10), detecting at least one parked motor vehicle (4, 6, 8) in a parking lot (16, 18, 20) adjacent to the parking space (10); (S300) upon detecting the parked motor vehicle (8), emitting a request signal (AFS) ) for activating a system (12) of the detected parked motor vehicle (4, 6, 8) in order to emit a response signal (ATS); (S400) detecting the emitted response signal (ATS) of the system (12) of the parked motor vehicle (4, 6, 8); (S500) evaluating the emitted response signal (ATS) at least by triangulation to determine whether the parked motor vehicle (4, 6, 8) is parked lengthways or transversely; (S600) outputting an output signal indicative of the parking space (10) for parallel or perpendicular parking.
