The invention relates to a method for determining an occupancy state of a parking space (110) in a parking area (100), comprising the following method steps: a. capturing magnetic field measured values in the environment of the parking space (110) along an axis by means of a magnetic field sensor (30) within a predefined period, b. forming a Poincare plot on the basis of the magnetic field measured values captured in method step a, c. determining a best-fit line (50) through the points (55) in the Poincare plot formed in method step b, in particular by means of linear regression, d. determining differences (60) in the vertical direction between the best-fit line (50) and the respective points (55) in the Poincare plot, e. calculating a mean value (M) of the differences (60) determined in method step d, f. determining the occupancy state of the parking space (110) on the basis of the mean value (M) calculated in method step e. The invention also relates to a device (10) which is designed to carry out a method according to the invention.
