The invention relates to a ground contact unit for a vehicle battery charging system, which ground contact unit has a base, at least one potential layer (24), a plurality of contact areas (20), a plurality of switching units (26) and a plurality of switching lines (44, 46), by means of which the switching units (26) can be actuated, a plurality of switching units (26) being provided on each of theswitching lines (44, 46). The switching lines (44, 46) are subdivided into at least two groups, and each of the switching units (26) is provided on at least two switching lines (44, 46) from at leasttwo different groups, such that the switching state of the switching unit (26) depends on the signal state on the associated switching lines (44, 46) thereof. Each switching unit (26) is coupled withat least one contact area (20) in such a way that the switching unit (26) can connect the corresponding at least one contact area (20) electrically to the at least one potential layer (24) assigned to the contact area (20) and disconnect the same. The invention further relates to a method for switching a contact area.
