The invention relates to the technical field of ships and in particular to a semi-submersible polar region research ship which comprises a ship body, wherein an icebreaking blade is arranged on the bow of the ship body; a water ballast tank is arranged in the bottom of the ship body; a superstructure is arranged on the upper portion of the ship body; a ship body design waterline is arranged between the superstructure and the bottom of the ship body; and a milling cutter module with an adjustable inclination angle and a propeller are arranged on the stern of the ship body. According to such a structural arrangement, the ice breaking blade is used for directly breaking a thinner ice layer, the water ballast tank is used for increasing ballast water to draft the ship body, the milling cuttermodule is used for thinning a thick ice layer and then breaking the ice layer, and the propeller is used for providing propelling force for the ship body. The semi-submersible polar region research ship has the stem-stern two-way icebreaking capacity, the ship body can break the thicker ice layer through the combined icebreaking mode, and meanwhile a safety guarantee is provided for icebreaking operation of a ship.
