A vehicle includes an internal combustion engine, a HVAC system, and an engine control unit that is configured to automatically stop and restart the internal combustion engine. When the HVAC system isturned off and the engine is stopped, the occurrence of at least one main condition related to a vehicle cooling event requiring operation of the HVAC system is determined, and the engine is automatically started before starting the HVAC system. The ability of the engine control unit to automatically stop the operation of the engine is disabled until the secondary condition associated with the HVAC system is met. When the secondary condition is satisfied, the ability of the engine control unit to at least automatically stop the operation of the engine is reactivated.
