The invention provides a vehicle and a method of preconditioning cabin air within a vehicle. A vehicle includes a climate control system, an engine, a battery, and a controller. The engine and the battery are each configured to power the climate control system. The controller is programmed to, responsive to a request to precondition cabin air and an estimated battery state of charge, that would result from the climate control system preconditioning the air, being less than a threshold, start the engine to power the climate control system regardless of an initial battery state of charge.
