The invention relates to a safety brake device for an elevator, and particularly relates to progressive safety tongs. The progressive safety tongs comprise a tongs body with brake grooves, as well as a left cover plate and a right cover plate which are fastened on the tongs body, wherein an elastic component and a movable wedge block are installed in the brake groove below the left cover plate, a fixed wedge block and a slide block are installed in the brake groove below the right cover plate, and the inclined surface of the fixed wedge block faces the movable wedge block, wherein the elastic component is a plate spring group composed of a plurality of plate springs. The progressive safety tongs disclosed by the invention have stable and drift-free parameters, and high repeatability, and therefore have quite high stability; moreover, due to the stable parameters, the safety tongs are easy to debug after being assembled, and therefore are convenient to use; and meanwhile, compared with the existing belleville springs and U-shaped springs, the plate springs are small in size, and therefore are low in manufacturing cost.
