The invention relates to a detection device and a detection method for a composite traction steel belt of an elevator. A high-frequency voltage source of the detection device for the composite traction steel belt of the elevator sends a high-frequency voltage with a preset frequency to each steel wire rope through a transmission circuit module; a reception circuit module receives an output voltage output by each steel wire rope on the basis of the corresponding high-frequency voltage, and sends each output voltage to a filter module; a power detection module receives a fundamental voltage output by the filter module after filtering each received output voltage, detects a power value of the composite traction steel belt on the basis of each fundamental voltage, and sends each power value to a judgement module; the judgement module compares each received power value with an initial value, and judges the wear degree of the composite traction steel belt on the basis of a comparison result; and when the steel belt is broken or notched, the high-frequency voltage of each steel wire rope is diffracted, and the power of the corresponding fundamental voltage obtained after each signal received by a receiving end is filtered is correspondingly reduced. A safety protection measure is adopted before the occurrence of a fault of the composite traction steel belt.
