An internal combustion engine has a crankshaft (1) which is situated in a crankcase (2) of the internal combustion engine. The crankshaft (1) has at least two crank journals (3), each mounted in a main bearing (4) of the crankcase (2) such that the crankshaft (1) can be rotated about a rotational axis (5). The crankshaft (1) has at least one crank pin (6) running coaxially with the rotational axis (5) and positioned eccentrically in relation to the axis (5), said pin being connected to the crank journals (3) by means of crank webs (7). The crank pin (6) is connected to a number of pistons (10) by means of a number of connecting rods (9). The respective pistons (10) oscillate in a number of cylinders (11) between a top dead centre (OT) and a bottom dead centre (UT). The rotor (12) of an electric machine is located on the crank webs (7). The stator (14) of the electric machine is located on the crankcase (2). The stator (14) of the electric machine interacts electromagnetically with the rotor (12) of said machine. The stator (14) of the electric machine is connected to a converter unit (15) in order to transmit electric energy bi-directionally.
